ADAS recalibration after a windshield replacement
If your car has lane-keeping, automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise control, there is a camera mounted to the windshield behind the mirror doing a lot of that work. Replace the glass and that camera gets moved. This post explains why that matters, what recalibration is, and what to ask when you book a replacement.
What the camera behind the mirror does
Most vehicles built from roughly 2018 onward carry a forward-facing camera mounted to the inside of the windshield. It reads lane markings, watches for vehicles and pedestrians ahead, and feeds that to the driver-assistance systems — collectively called ADAS, for advanced driver assistance systems. On some vehicles it’s the main sensor for those features; on others it works alongside radar.
The camera’s usefulness depends on it pointing exactly where the manufacturer expects. It’s aimed to a fraction of a degree relative to the vehicle’s centerline, and the software assumes that aim is correct.
Why replacing the glass changes that
The camera is fixed to a bracket bonded to the windshield. When the windshield comes out, the camera comes with it. When new glass goes in, the camera is re-mounted to the new bracket — and even a very careful installation can leave it a fraction off from where it was.
A fraction of a degree at the camera becomes a meaningful distance a hundred yards down the road. That’s why manufacturers typically specify a recalibration after a windshield replacement on camera-equipped vehicles: not because anything went wrong, but because the camera’s reference point has moved and the system needs to be told where it is now.
Static and dynamic calibration
There are two methods, and which one a vehicle needs is set by the manufacturer, not by the shop.
Static calibration happens with the vehicle parked. A target board is set up at a precise distance and height in front of the car, on level ground with controlled lighting, and a diagnostic tool walks the camera through recognising the target. It needs space and a controlled environment.
Dynamic calibration happens on the road. A diagnostic tool is connected and the vehicle is driven at a set speed on well-marked roads for a set distance while the camera relearns its reference from real lane lines. It needs the right kind of road and the right conditions.
Some vehicles need both. Static first, then a dynamic drive to confirm.
Neither is a five-minute add-on. Both depend on the procedure being done to the manufacturer’s specification, and both should end with a scan showing the system has accepted the calibration.
A chip repair doesn’t trigger this
Worth stating plainly: a resin chip repair does not require recalibration. The repair fills the break in the outer layer of the glass. The windshield stays in the vehicle, the bracket stays bonded, the camera stays where it was. The chip repair page covers what a repair does and doesn’t do.
That’s one of the practical reasons to deal with a chip early: while it’s a chip, it’s a repair. Once it’s a crack, it’s a replacement, and on a camera-equipped vehicle a replacement brings the calibration question with it.
What to ask whoever does the replacement
Regardless of who you book with, three questions cover it:
- Does my vehicle need recalibration after this? The answer should be specific to your year, make, model and trim — the same model can carry different sensor packages.
- Is it included, and who does it? Some shops calibrate in-house, some sublet it to a specialist, some don’t handle it at all. There’s nothing wrong with any of those as long as you know which one it is before the glass is out.
- Is it documented? Ask for the pre-scan and post-scan reports, or the calibration confirmation, in writing. If the system’s status isn’t recorded, you have no way of knowing whether it was done or whether it succeeded.
If the answer to the first question is “we’re not sure,” that’s a reason to pause and find out before booking rather than after.

Replacing a windshield on a modern vehicle is two jobs: the glass, and putting the camera back on speaking terms with the car. The first is visible and the second isn’t, which is exactly why it’s worth asking about.
