Windshield Chip & Crack Repair in Irvine

A rock chip caught early is a resin fill that takes about half an hour. Left alone through a few hot afternoons and a cold night, it becomes a crack — and a crack means new glass.

What a chip repair actually does

A windshield is two sheets of glass with a plastic layer bonded between them. A stone strike breaks the outer sheet and leaves an air pocket behind — that's the bright silver spot you can see. Repair means drawing the air out of that pocket under vacuum, pushing a clear resin into the space it left, and curing the resin hard.

What you get back is glass that's structurally sound again and damage that has stopped travelling. The factory seal around the windshield is never disturbed, which is the quiet advantage repair has over any replacement, however carefully the replacement is done.

When to repair, and when it's past that

Usually repairable

  • Chips smaller than about a quarter
  • Star breaks and bullseyes away from the edge
  • Damage outside the driver's line of sight
  • Single-layer damage that hasn't gone through

Usually needs replacing

  • Cracks longer than a dollar bill
  • Damage right at the edge of the glass
  • Anything sitting in the driver's sightline
  • Breaks that have gone through both layers

These are guidelines rather than rules — edge cases exist, and a photo settles it faster than a paragraph. Read about replacement ›

Chip repair — common questions

Is my chip repairable?

Usually, if it's smaller than about a quarter, isn't sitting in the driver's direct line of sight, hasn't reached the edge of the glass, and hasn't gone through both layers. Send a photo and we'll tell you before anybody books anything.

How long does rock chip repair take?

Most take twenty to thirty minutes from setup to finish. It's genuinely a job you can have done while the car sits in your work lot.

Will the chip disappear completely?

No, and be wary of anyone who promises it will. Resin repair restores the strength of the glass and stops the damage spreading. Cosmetically it usually improves a lot — often to a faint mark you have to look for — but a small blemish normally remains.

How soon should I get a chip repaired?

Sooner is genuinely better here, and not as a sales line. A chip is a stress point. Temperature swings, a speed bump, or a blast of cold air conditioning onto hot glass can run it into a crack, and once it's a long crack the cheap repair is off the table.

Can you repair a chip in Irvine at my workplace?

Yes. Chip repair is the easiest job to do mobile — we come to the car in Irvine or anywhere else we cover, and you carry on with whatever you were doing.

What if the chip turns out not to be repairable?

Then we say so before starting, not after. If it needs new glass we'll quote the replacement and you decide from there — there's no obligation attached to us having driven out.
